The Jazz Collaboration Project Show 4.17.23 - @The District

Dear Parents,

One week from last night, we have our “The Jazz Collaboration Project” concert at the District. I have had some questions about what this is all about and I know it would be great to explain the background behind it.

What is it?

  • The concert is going to feature 30 minutes of music from three different high schools (Lincoln, O'Gorman, Mitchell). These are the Jazz 1’s of each school.

  • Each school will be performing with a professional jazz musician. Our kids will be playing with Adam Meckler (he played with us at the state convention last Feb). Lincoln is playing with Joel Shotwell and O'Gorman will be playing with Dr. Hanegan from Augustana.

Why is this important?

  • Often, our kids associate listening to or performing alongside other schools with competition. While competition is part of music education, it is not the entire thing. We think that it is important for students to see and appreciate the work of other schools putting in similar effort to ourselves.

  • We want our students to gather with students from other schools and share their love of music with one another. Music is an avenue of communication and we want to provide an opportunity for our students to explore that avenue in a non-competitive environment.

  • Personally, I have seen connections that have been developed through these events in the past. I believe it is valuable.

Details:

  • Concert is held at the District (beautiful venue for live music!)

  • Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased through your student or at the door. (All of the cost will go towards paying for the venue. Any additional income will be split evenly between the three schools)

  • Doors will open at 6:30 pm

  • Concert will begin at 7 pm.

Have a great week and we hope to see you this coming Monday night at the District in Sioux Falls!
